A Newsletter from Markel Underwriting Managers, Inc.

January 2007

                                                Letter from the President

Happy New Year to all of our partners and friends. We hope that your holiday celebrations were enjoyable, healthy and prosperous. We look forward to another great year in 2007.

As we enter the new year at MUM, our direction remains the same. We are a surplus lines underwriting entity dedicated to providing product line solutions to our wholesale partners. To maintain our success, we will continue to communicate and respond to your needs.

As all of you know, we started a Marketing division in late 2005 to enhance the dialogue between our producers. We have listened to your needs and provided new products and alternatives. We believe this has strengthened our relationship and our platform.

Sarah and her team remain dedicated to providing superior product solutions and most importantly, listening to your needs in an effort to help. Please continue to provide us with feedback by calling Sarah and/or myself.

We believe 2007 will be a challenging and exciting year. There are endless opportunities that we can pursue collaboratively with you in an effort to make 2007 another great year.

We thank you very much for your partnership and for your business.

A Word from the Marketing Division

2006 was a fantastic year of change and transition for Markel Underwriting Managers, Inc.  As you all know, we celebrated our 10th anniversary with the Markel Corporation.  We celebrated this milestone with a local dinner attended by those producers who have contributed to our success over those years.  We also changed our name!  As a result, we are in the process of revising all broker agreements.  You will all be receiving new broker agreements in your offices.  In addition to the name change, we also amended premium payment due dates and added wording that addresses compensation disclosure.  We appreciate any assistance in completing and returning these documents as soon as possible.

Where are we going in 2007?  What can we expect to see from MUM?  Our focus in 2007 will be you, our customers.  We will focus on strengthening and expanding current relationships.  We will also focus on new business opportunities whether at existing producers or with our new appointments.  We will routinely seek feedback from our producer plant as respects service, products and expansion opportunities.  Marketing will assist in gathering market intelligence where feasible.  We cannot be successful unless we are quickly and effectively responding to your needs or suggestions. We want to grow our book of business with all of you and that requires constant contact and communication. Please, continue to communicate.  Expect to see our folks on a more regular basis throughout 2007!

We recently announced our new Excess Environmental product.  This product was created to fill a need in the marketplace and has received much interest since its roll out.  We have a few other new products in the pipeline and always welcome any creative thoughts or ideas you have that could lead to a new product or product enhancement.

Marketing will continue to work closely with our product line associates and with you, our customer.  Our goal is to ensure accurate and consistent information exchange between the two parties in order to seek out and support profitable business.  We will help to bring your opinions, feedback and ideas to MUM's management team and promise a quick response when necessary.  Should you have anything you would like to share, please feel free to give me a call.

We look forward to a year of profit and growth!  Thanks for your support!
