Yes, We Write Vacant Properties!
Vacant properties constitute one of our largest classes of business. We write a cross section of former occupancies, including restaurants, manufacturing plants, shopping centers and offices. Underwriting criteria we consider are length of vacancy (preferably under 5 years), future prospects for building (sorry, we don’t consider potential demolition a “prospect”), surrounding area and site security. We have high limits, including up to $20,000,000 on vacant hospitals.
Each risk is rated based on its individual merits. We will even offer replacement cost valuation on what we consider to be the better vacancies. Warranties will typically require protection against freezing, no change in occupancy, locked/secured building and maintenance of existing fire/burglary protective systems.
As an added feature, we can also provide the liability coverage (excluding products) to allow you to present a package product.
If interested in additional information, please contact any member of our property team or visit us at our website www.markelunderwriters.com.

ENVIRONMENTAL DIVISION
IT’S ABOUT THE PEOPLE AND THEIR SERVICE

The environmental division just completed it is 7th consecutive successful year and is looking forward to its 8th year. As the manger of this department it is not a mystery to why we have been successful it is directly related to the people in the department and their commitment and dedication. The environmental division opened in March of 2000.
This homegrown unit started with two individuals Scott McDougall and myself.
Scott was hired in January 2000 and has been recently promoted to Associate Vice President and the Assistant Manager. Scott along with Kim Jackson (hired May 2004) his assistant runs the south and southwest region.
Senior Underwriter Patricia Woods was added in the first year June 2000 as well as her underwriting assistant Scott Smith (hired March 2000) earlier in the same year. Patty and Scott are managing the mid-west region for the division.
Underwriter Amy Gamgee (Thurber) joined the environmental division in October 2000 as an underwriting assistant. Working her way through the ranks she was promoted to an underwriter two years ago. Amy specializes on renewal accounts and new business small accounts.
Team Leader and Senior Underwriter Jeff Foering joined the team from RSA’s environmental unit in January 2002. Jeff along with John Diahy hired in the department October 2001 and transplanted from another area at MUM manages the mid-Atlantic and New England region. Jeff is a very technically strong underwriter that continuously provides IT and policy language support.
Senior Underwriter Catherine Sevret joined the environmental division in February 2003 from Kemper Environmental. Cathy co-operates the western states region with Mark Brown. Bret Dumas assists Cathy on her accounts. Bret joined the team in November 2004.
Technical Administrator Fern Calascibetta manages the underwriting assistants in both the NJ and MD offices. Fern joined the team in February 2003 from Kemper Environmental and was selected as the “Employee of the Year” in 2006. Fern along with Joan Berardi (August 2006) are teamed with Mark Brown in the western States. Joan Berardi is also our business submission point person for the environmental division. You can send Joan all of your accounts!
In February 2006 we added two senior underwriters Tim Ho and Lou Ann Cook from AIG environmental and opened up a Maryland office in the town of Glen Burnie. Tim and Lou Ann have done a nice job building their own broker force and establishing themselves, in the marketplace. In April 2006 Sharon Jimenez was added as the MD officeas a technical administrator.
Service has been the environmental division’s forte` from the start. Our ability to quickly respond and turn accounts around is key to the success of the division. Also key is our distribution system our 100% wholesale “Select” broker force. The brokers and the established relations with our personnel, the clear communication of our risk appetite and the business submissions requirements has lead itself to success for all parties.
The Environmental Division would like to thank all of our producers that assisted in the gross written premium of $52,300,000 in 2006. It is clear that our success is just not about us, but it is very much about you our “Select Wholesalers”.
Looking forward to a great 2007!

MUM Associates Train to Save Lives!
Health and personal well being are important here at MUM. This month we hosted 6 adult CPR and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) training courses. Each class taught the required skills necessary to recognize and care for injuries until a medical help arrives. The course, which has taught by the American Red Cross, consisted of hands on experience and a written test. Thanks to the American Red Cross, over 65 MUM associates are now certified to help save lives!
